IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE in 2026: Which English Test Actually Gets Indian Students Into Their Dream University?

IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE in 2026: fees, formats, country acceptance, and which test is right for you. ACHIVIA shares honest information for Indian students.

Most career fairs don’t tell you this, but the test you pick can affect your university admission. It’s less about your English skills and more about choosing the right exam for your target university.

All three tests—IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and PTE —are accepted by thousands of universities worldwide. But 'accepted' can mean different things. What’s the minimum score? How do universities check your results? Which visas do they cover? How long are your scores valid? These details are important. Here’s a simple breakdown.

IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE: The Core Differences That Actually Affect Your Score

Grammar and vocabulary are not the primary differences between these assessments. It concerns how and by whom your responses are scored. For speaking and writing, IELTS Academic employs human examiners. AI and human scoring are both used in TOEFL iBT. Only an AI system is used to score PTE Academic. This can be an important consideration for Indian students.

Human examiners (IELTS) can be subjective. A confident, fluent speaker might get a higher score based on rapport, while a strong regional accent might face unconscious bias and score variance, despite perfect grammar.

Computer-based tests (PTE and TOEFL) use automated scoring systems like SpeechRater. Because algorithms strictly evaluate vocabulary, syntax and acoustic intelligibility free of personal bias, many students with distinct accents find AI scoring more consistent and fair.

Unlike IELTS, which strictly segregates the four skills, PTE uses integrated tasks that combine multiple skills. This means a single weakness or mistake in one area (like speaking) can drag down scores across multiple sections, such as reading and writing. Consequently, IELTS tends to be more forgiving for test-takers who are weak in just one specific skill.

The Honest Fee and Results Breakdown

As of 2025–26, here's what each test costs and how long you'll wait for results:

Test

Fee in India (approx.)

Results Timeline

IELTS

₹19,000

3–5 days

TOEFL iBT

₹15,254

4–8 days

PTE Academic

₹18,900

48 hours

The 48-hour turnaround time with PTE is a real plus if you are tight on application dates. Pratyush Sahu, who completed his MS in Computer Science at University College Dublin, scored 7.5 in IELTS with 15 days of preparation. In his words: 'I didn't think 15 days was enough, but having a structured plan made the difference.' ACHIVIA's test coaching was part of his application preparation.  ACHIVIA has programs covering all required tests, which makes a difference if you are taking them at the last minute.

Which Test Does Your Country Actually Want?

This is where most comparison blogs go vague. They shouldn't.

Australia accepts IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE for the Subclass 500 student visa. In practice, PTE is the most commonly listed test across Australian university admissions pages, and many institutions publish PTE score requirements more prominently than the others. If you're applying to Australian universities, any of the three will work — but PTE tends to involve the least back-and-forth with admissions.

The UK is heavily IELTS-oriented at both the university and visa levels. The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider — and TOEFL is not on the UKVI SELT list for visa purposes, only for admissions. This is a critical distinction. You can get into a UK university with TOEFL, but you cannot use it to apply for your Student visa. You'll need IELTS or PTE Academic (or a few others) for the visa itself.

USA is TOEFL's home territory. Most US universities list TOEFL first, and score minimums are well-calibrated for US programs. IELTS is widely accepted, PTE increasingly so — but if you're applying primarily to US schools, TOEFL is the path of least resistance. According to IIE Open Doors 2024, India is now the top sender of international students to the United States — 331,602 students in 2023–24 — which means US admissions offices process Indian applications in high volumes and know exactly what a TOEFL score means.

Canada accepts all three tests for university admissions. For immigration, IRCC recognizes IELTS and CELPIP for Express Entry and most permanent residency options. TOEFL and PTE are accepted for study permits, but not for most immigration programs. If you want to study in Canada and later apply for PR, IELTS is the better long-term choice.

Germany and Ireland usually accept all three tests for international English-medium programs, but requirements can vary by department. Always check the specific program’s page.

How to match your test format to the way you think?

The "which test is easier" question is almost always the wrong question. The right question is: which test format maps to how you process language under pressure?

The TOEFL test has all components delivered via computer. There are also many note-taking tasks involved in completing the test. The test measures the candidate's ability to read academic materials for 60-80 minutes without a break. It is appropriate for you if you have taken an intensive undergraduate program in India and can read academic text at a comfortable pace. If you find long reading passages exhausting, you may want to consider looking into taking the IELTS test, as its reading passages are generally shorter than those of the TOEFL.

PTE rewards strategic preparation more than natural fluency. There are specific response templates for Describe Image and Summarise Written Text that, once you've practiced them, make the test highly reproducible. That's not gaming the system — it's exactly what the test designers intended.

Sakshi Sahoo scored Band 8 in IELTS and is now studying MSc International Law at the University of Edinburgh. Krish Jain hit Band 8 for his BSc Computer Science at the University of Guelph, Canada. Both ACHIVIA's senior test prep counselor, through structured weekly sessions. As Krish put it: 'The mock tests were harder than the real exam — by test day it felt familiar.'

A Final Check Before You Book Your Test

Every year, students submit strong applications to UK universities with TOEFL scores — only to realize they still need IELTS or PTE for their visa. It's not a technicality. It delays visa processing, sometimes past the intake start date.

ACHIVIA, an overseas education consultancy in India, always checks these details. Verifying test eligibility for visas is a standard part of the College Selection process, not something left until the end.

Deadlines for the September 2026 intake at UK and Australian universities usually fall between December 2025 and February 2026. If you haven’t booked your test yet, you still have time, but there isn’t much room for a retake.
